SCLS has been working closely with the community for over 15 years. In working with our youth and families over these many years, second chance realized the need for stabilization for the whole family unit. In this realization, it was brought forth that we needed to ensure stable and affordable housing as well as a chance to realize the American dream of home ownership.
In working with financial industry professionals, second chance opted for a Housing Pilot program in 2005 that would enable individuals and families with poor or little credit a chance to rebuild credit and purchase a home. With the rolling out of this program, we decided to advocate with the potential home buyers or program enrollees, which we walked the buyer through the process of educating them on credit as well as the home buyer process.
Family Housing and Purchase Program – We provide Affordable and Safe Single Family Homes for Purchase to Low Income to Moderate Income Individuals and Families. Homes are provided through donations from Banks, Credit Unions, Businesses and or Private
Individuals or Business. When Grants or any other Financial means are available, Existing homes will be purchases and when possible we will provide New Construction Homes. The program Locates and Identifies Urban and Rural Areas and Properties that will cater to Low
and Moderate Incomes. We work with Individuals and Families that are interested in purchasing immediately as well as in future scenarios by providing Lease With Option To Buy at 3 to 5 Year Options. By utilizing this option, Individuals and Families are afforded the opportunity to save for any out of pocket expenses that are or would be associated with purchasing a home. The potential buyer is also afforded the opportunity to see if home ownership is best for them by choosing this program of lease with option to buy. It also allows for the potential buyer and family to get acquainted with being responsible for their own repairs, etc. By utilizing the Lease with option to buy, a portion of the potential buyers' rent will go toward down payment and or closing costs. The program also allows for a good Rental (Occupancy) History that banks and creditors look for. Upon verifying the Individuals or Families qualify for this program, they must attend our Financial Literacy Workshops and Classes (for more information on the financial literacy program visit www.thepromlandintl.com) to ensure success and put the families and individuals on the road to Home Ownership and helping to establish and clean up any credit issues that may prohibit them from obtaining fair housing opportunities as well as any other financial assets. The Financial Literacy Program ensures a higher success ratio of Individuals and Families will Purchase and Retain their homes or properties at length.
